MIAMI -- Its not as if they still have Bird, McHale and Parish. Its not as if -- going back even further -- they still have Russell and Cousy. No, the Boston Celtics dont have any of those superstars. Their leading scorer is Isaiah Thomas -- and hes not that Isaiah Thomas, the Hall of Famer from Chicago. This is the 5-foot-9 Isaiah Thomas, the one from Tacoma, Wash. Yet this particular Thomas, who is averaging 26.1 points and 6.3 assists, has continued a recent but substantial trend of Celtics domination over the Miami Heat.Since Thomas joined the Celtics last season, Boston is 3-0 against the Heat, and its an Eastern Conference rivalry that will be renewed on Monday night inside Miamis AmericanAirlines Arena. But going back before Thomas arrived, Boston has won at least one game per season in nine of the past 10 years. That overlaps the time span when the Heat had far superior talent with LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. Now Miamis Big Three is effectively gone, and the Heat (5-11) is paying the price, falling to its current standing of 13th place out of 15 teams in the Eastern Conference. The Celtics (9-7), meanwhile, appear to be a team on the rise, sitting in fifth place in the East at the moment.Boston could be ready to get on a roll now that post player and four-time All-Star Al Horford has returned. He missed nine games due to a concussion, and he is just now rounding back into form after returning on Nov. 19.He makes a huge difference to our team, Thomas told the media. Even if he is not scoring, he is still defending and making plays for his teammates.Horford has two double-doubles in the four games since he came off the disabled list. He has averaged 16.8 points and 8.0 rebounds since returning, and both of those numbers are higher than his season averages.Miami already struggles to score but may get strangled on Monday by Avery Bradleys tight defense. Bradley, a 6-2 shooting guard, is a dynamo who is just entering his prime after years of battling injuries.Bradley, who made first-team All-Defense last season, leads Boston in rebounding (8.0) and is second in scoring (17.9).Jae Crowder, a 6-6, 235-pound small forward, is Bostons other double-figure scorer, averaging 12.5 points.Amir Johnson, a 6-9, 240-pound power forward, is Bostons fifth starter. He, Bradley and Horford are the key figures on Bostons defense. And remember, Boston was fifth in the NBA in defensive efficiency last season without Horford. His defense has made the unit better. The Heat will try to crack that defense, but it will depend to a large extent on some health issues. Point guard Goran Dragic (elbow) and shooting guard Dion Waiters (groin) are listed as questionable. In addition, starting small forward Justise Winslow is out due to a wrist injury. It will be the eighth straight game he has missed.Has it been that long already? Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said painfully. Everything is day to day. He hasnt gone through a practice yet.Generally, Spoelstra prefers that a player get at least one full practice in before returning to the lineup. But with Miami potentially missing three of its top four starters -- Dragic, Waiters and Winslow -- Spoelstra may have to alter that plan.Miami will continue to rely on center Hassan Whiteside, who is averaging 16.8 points, 14.9 rebounds and 2.5 blocks. On the perimeter, Miami will look to scorers such as Josh Richardson (10.8) and sixth-man Tyler Johnson (12.4). The team also has yet to decide on the future of Doug Berry, who began the season as a consultant to the head coach but took over the offensive co-ordinators duties in July. Kelly Olynyk Jersey . McCarthy, a player who played some games in the second tier for Wigan at the start of this season, would go on to shine inside Evertons midfield, outplaying the man he was brought in to replace, on one of the grandest stages in English football. On Saturday, it was fitting that Manchester Uniteds most recent dagger into the chest was delivered by Frenchman Yohan Cabaye, a wonderfully gifted central midfielder who put on an outstanding effort for Newcastle at Old Trafford. Tyler Herro Jersey . -- Anaheim Ducks captain and leading scorer Ryan Getzlaf has been scratched from Sunday nights game against the Vancouver Canucks because of an upper-body injury. Whisenhunt said he hit it off quickly with Ruston Webster when interviewing for the job Friday night. Twenty-six years ago this week -- the exact date was July 11, 1990 -- the Chicago White Sox tried something a little daring for their game against the Milwaukee Brewers. The Sox dressed in uniforms based on the teams 1917 unis.Going along with the old-school vibe, general admission tickets were 50 cents and popcorn was sold for a nickel. Comiskey Parks public address system was shut down for the day, and lineups were announced via a megaphone. Most of the advertisements in the ballpark were covered up. Men dressed in straw hats and bow ties, and women in long skirts and bonnets. There was a barbershop quartet, a hand-operated scoreboard, and an organ-grinder with a monkey.A note in the scorecard explained what was going on. Welcome to Turn Back the Clock Day at Comiskey Park, it began. To help savor the final season at historic Comiskey, the White Sox want you to be able to look at the field, squint, and perhaps capture the flavor of what it was like here in 1917, the last year the Sox were World Champions. To help you imagine, the team will appear in 1917 replica uniforms made of current cloth but made along the lines of bygone days. And so began the first attempt at what has now become a common promotion in the sports world: the throwback game. Teams typically no longer bother with most of the nostalgic trappings (tough break for the organ-grinder industry), but the key component -- the use of throwback uniforms -- has remained. Throwbacks have become so firmly established in the uni-verse, and are such reliable crowd-pleasers, that its easy to forget how revolutionary they once seemed, especially on that day in Chicago in 1990.Steve Winkler, a lifelong Chicagoan who works for the Cook County Clerks office, was one of the 40,666 fans who attended that game. He was 24 years old at the time and remembers it very clearly.I was coaching Little League, and I took about 10 or 15 kids and adults to the game with me, because the ticket prices were so low, he said. The uniforms were terrific -- they were very authentic. Or as authentic as they could be. Of course, the kids didnt quite grasp the whole thing, so the adults were explaining everything to them.Michael James, a data analyst and Brewers fan from Milwaukee, drove down to Chicago that day with a friend. I thought the uniforms were a brilliant idea, James said. I was a little disappointed the Brewers didnt do something with their uniforms, but they were only a 20-year-old team at the time, so they didnt have much of a history to dip back into.Winkler and James both enjoy the feeling of having been in on the ground floor of the throwback revolution. Anytime someone does a throwback game, I think, Yeah, I was there for that first one, James said.(Winkler, though, takes a dim view of teams that trot out throwback uniforms but dont include all the retro-themed trimmings that the White Sox provided back in 1990. Amateurs, he sniffs.)It didnt take other sports long to be bitten by the throwback bug. Heres a look at the first throwback uniforms worn by the other major North American pro leagues, presented in the order in which they jumpeed aboard the throwback bandwagon:NHL: The NHL introduced throwbacks for its 1991-92 season, when the league was celebrating its 75th anniversary.dddddddddddd The Original Six teams -- the Blackhawks, Bruins, Canadiens, Maple Leafs, Rangers and Red Wings -- all added throwback uniforms to their wardrobes that season.NFL: The first NFL team to turn back the clock was the 1993 Jets, who commemorated the 25th anniversary of their Super Bowl III-winning season by wearing a throwback uniform -- sort of. Instead of new white helmets, the Jets used their existing green helmet shells, adorned with a green version of their classic 1960s logo. The rest of the NFL took the throwback plunge the following season, as the league marked its 75th anniversary with a wide-ranging series of throwbacks.NBA: The NBA was the last of the major pro leagues to embrace the throwback trend, finally succumbing in 1996-97 as part of the leagues 50th anniversary.By now, the vast majority of major-level pro teams have worn throwbacks at some point. Three of them have even done so while competing for a championship. In 1994, the San Francisco 49ers were so successful while wearing their throwbacks during the regular season that they asked the NFL for permission to wear them during the postseason, which culminated in their victory over the San Diego Chargers in Super Bowl XXIX.In the 2003 NBA Finals, the New Jersey Nets revived their Dr. J-era throwbacks, although that move wasnt enough to keep them afloat against the San Antonio Spurs. And earlier this year, the Pittsburgh Penguins wore their throwbacks while defeating the San Jose Sharks in the Stanley Cup finals. And if a team hasnt existed long enough to have a throwback design, it can still play along by creating a fauxback, a move pioneered by the Tampa Bay Rays in 2012.Its appropriate that the White Sox were the ones to pioneer the throwback craze, because theyve had some pretty bizarre uniforms over the years, from their untucked leisure suits to their beach blanket design with the uni number on the leg and their reverse-field stirrups (a rare instance of the White Sox living up to their name!). After 26 years, theyve now tried throwback versions of many of those designs, but theres one Sox uni that Winkler would still like to see.The shorts, he says. Thats the one Im waiting for. ?Hes not the only one. Come on, Sox -- make it happen.(Special thanks to Mike Chamernik and Eric Pytel for their research assistance.)Would you like to nominate a uniform, uni element, or event to be showcased in a future Friday Flashback installment?
