COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Texas A&M led from start to finish as the Aggies cruised to a 25-6, 25-15, 25-18 victory over South Carolina tonight at Reed Arena. It was the fifth consecutive victory for the Aggies, who improve to 11-6 overall and 5-1 in Southeastern Conference matches. South Carolina suffered its fourth consecutive loss and falls to 13-5 overall and 1-5 in conference play.Texas A&M shredded the South Carolina defense in the opening set, with junior setter Stephanie Aiple directing the Aggie offense to a blistering .652 hitting efficiency. Junior outside hitter Kiara McGee set the tone from the get-go, getting a straight-down kill to start the match and then putting down a South Carolina overpass on the ensuing play. The Aggies held a 4-2 lead when the Gamecocks served long and freshman outside hitter Hollann Hans followed with three consecutive kills during an 8-0 A&M run. Texas A&M continued to pull away, twice reeling off runs of five points while never allowing the Gamecocks to score consecutive points. South Carolina, which hit .000 in the set, had an attack error that put the Aggies at set point, and Texas A&M senior middle blocker Jazzmin Babers ended the frame with a solo block. The Gamecocks six points in the stanza tied the A&M record for fewest points allowed in a non-fifth set, first accomplished in a 25-22, 25-6, 25-18 sweep against South Carolina in the final match of the 2013 regular season and tied earlier this season in a 3-1 victory at LSU.The Aggies held a 3-2 lead in the second set before a McGee kill marked the start of a 9-0 run, giving A&M its largest lead of the stanza, 12-2. South Carolina got within five points at 18-13 following a 3-0 run-equaling its longest scoring streak of the match-but could get no closer. The Aggies held a 20-14 cushion before a Gamecock service error, a kill by Babers, an ace by Texas A&M senior defensive specialist Victoria Arenas and a kill by McGee put the Aggies at set point. The Gamecocks, who were still hitting .000 for the match, got a block on the next play before Babers got a kill to close out the set and put the Aggies up, 2-0, in the match.Texas A&M sophomore middle blocker Kaitlyn Blake, the reigning SEC Player of the Week, and junior opposite hitter Ashlie Reasor had back-to-back kills to begin the third set, and the Aggies never let up. Even libero Amy Nettles got a kill in the set, digging a ball that went over the net and fell in for a kill to put the Aggies up, 20-14. Reasor won a joust to put A&M ahead, 21-14, before the teams began to exchange point for point. Senior setter Kaysie Shebeneck, who replaced Aiple with the Aggies up, 19-12, got the match-ending kill.McGee and Hans tied for match-high honors in kills with 11 apiece while hitting .348 and .333, respectively. Aiple had 30 assists as A&M hit a season-high .404 while holding the Gamecocks to a .088 hitting efficiency.Junior defensive specialist Gabby Litwin had a season-high 10 digs, tying Nettles for match-high honors, and sophomore defensive specialist Amy Houser led all players and tied her career high with two aces. Babers and Blake tied for match-high honors with three blocks, giving Babers 490 total blocks for her career and moving her into a tie for third place in the A&M all-time records with former two-time All-American Sherri Brinkman (1983-85).The victory gave Texas A&M head coach Laurie Corbelli her 599th win in her 31-year head coaching career, as well as her 499th victory in her 24th season as head coach of the Aggies. The Aggies will aim to give her a milestone victory and win their sixth consecutive match when they return to Reed Arena on Sunday at 4 p.m. for a highly anticipated match against No. 9 Florida. At a news conference Tuesday where it was thought that the fiery Schallibaum may be shown the door after a dismal finish to the Major League Soccer season, team president Joey Saputo said no decision has been made on whether the Swiss Volcano will be back in 2014. NEW ORLEANS -- Denver coach Mike Malone decided the Nuggets should not in fact do whatever it takes to stop Anthony Davis.Instead, the Nuggets stuck to their usual defensive principles against New Orleans and it paid off -- barely.Jusuf Nurkic scored 23 points, Will Barton added 22, and Denver survived a dominant performance by Davis to defeat the Pelicans 107-102 in both teams regular season opener Wednesday night. When you play against a great player, you have a problem you need to answer: Are you going to shut him down and create problems elsewhere, or are you going to let him get his and hope nobody else goes off?, Malone said.Denver did the latter and Davis wound up with 50 points, 16 rebounds, seven steals, five assists and four blocks. His prolific play helped New Orleans trim a deficit as large as 14 late in the second quarter down to two points in the waning minutes. We gave them too many easy looks in the beginning of the game, Davis said. We gave ourselves a chance. Weve just got to play like we played in the third and fourth quarter in the beginning of the game.Davis didnt get much help offensively. The rest of the Pelicans combined to shoot 21 of 58.Tim Frazier scored 15 for the Pelicans. ETwaun Moore added 10 points, but missed a 3-point attempt that could have tied it with 24 seconds left.Danilo Gallinari scored 15 for Denver, Wilson Chandler added 12 points and Kenneth Faried finished with 14 rebounds -- six on the offensive end to help Denver finished with a 14-3 advantage in second-chance points.Denver built its largest lead when Barton hit a 3 and a layup to spark a 9-2 run that made 60-46 in the final minute of the second quarter.I was just trying to be aggressive, staying in attack mode, whether Im scoring for myself of making plays for others, Barton said. The Nuggets still led by 10, at 87-77, when Kenneth Farieds 5-foot hook shot opened scoring in the fourth quarter, but New Orleans managed to keep its deficit within single digits most of the final period. Davis pulled the Pelicans as close as 100-98 when he cut into the lane for a layup with 2:32 to go.Davis didnt fault his teammattes for the loss, saying their shot selection was decent but that they missed shots they often make.dddddddddddd He was more inclined to criticize himself for a few missed shots from close range and his late turnover.Im going to have to -- probably not 50 every night -- but try to get somewhere along those lines every game to give ourselves a chance, Davis said.ROOKIE DEBUTSNuggets rookie guard Jamal Murray, taken seventh overall in last summers draft -- one spot behind Pelicans rookie Buddy Hield -- played 13 minutes and was 0 of 2 shooting, finishing with a point on a free throw. Hield missed the first three shots of his NBA career before scoring his first points on a driving layup. He finished with four points on 2 of 8 shooting in nearly 17 minutes off the bench.OFF THE MARKBoth teams let fly frequently from 3-point range, but often inaccurately. Denver missed 16 of 24 from deep. The Pelicans made only three of 19.TIP-INSNuggets: Between Gallinari, Nikola Jokic and the 7-foot- Nurkic, Denver opened the game with three players 6-10 or taller on the floor at a time when a number of teams are favoring smaller lineups that feature the quicker, more versatile players on their rosters. Obviously the trend is going away from what we do, but were not worried about what the trends are, Malone said. Were going to do what we think is best for us, but within our game youll see a lot of different lineups.Pelicans: Before the game, the Pelicans wore black T-shirts during warm-ups honoring Bryce Dejean-Jones, who was fatally shot last May when he forced his way into an apartment that he had mistaken for that of his girlfriend. The shirts had the letters BDJ on the chest with Dejean-Jones No. 31 underneath. Its unfortunate what happened the fact that hes not with us any longer, but he was part of our family and we just wanted to do something to pay tribute to him, Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry said.UP NEXTNuggets: Host Portland on Saturday night.Pelicans: Host Golden State on Friday night.
