PHILADELPHIA -- Ryan Howard helped the Phillies honor Jim Thome in a pregame ceremony. Then, Howard turned back the clock and showed the type of power that forced Philadelphia to trade Thome more than a decade ago.Howard hit a grand slam and drove in five runs to help Jake Thompson earn his first major league victory, a 10-6 win over the Colorado Rockies on Friday night. Before the game Thome became the 38th player inducted into the clubs wall of fame. The Phillies signed the slugger in 2002 but traded him three years later because he was blocking up-and-coming Howard at first base. You want to go out there and try to get the win on a special night like this, especially with it being alumni weekend and Thome going into the wall of fame here, Howard said. Being able to get something to hit and having it land on the other side of the fence is the bonus.Howard finished with three hits. He is batting .462 with four doubles, three homers and 10 RBI in his last eight games.Hes swinging the bat as well as Ive seen him, Phillies manager Pete Mackanin said. Its good to see.Cesar Hernandez, Cameron Rupp and Aaron Altherr added two hits each for Philadelphia, which opened a nine-game homestand by winning its second straight.Charlie Blackmon hit three solo home runs and D.J. LeMahieu also went deep for the Rockies, who entered play 4 1/2 games out of the wild card.Thompson (1-1) earned his first win in his second career start after allowing three runs and two hits with six strikeouts and three walks in five innings. Its kind of nice to get the first one out of the way, and hopefully Ill gain a lot more confidence and comfort on the mound and keep it rolling, Thompson said.Howard extended his franchise record with his 14th grand slam, launching a 1-0 pitch from Jon Gray (8-6) into the Rockies bullpen in right-center field to break a 3-3 tie. The veteran slugger, who received a curtain call after the hit, tied Rocky Colavito for 76th place all-time in major league history with his 374th homer.Gray left after Howards home run, having surrendered seven runs -- six earned -- and six hits with six strikeouts and four walks in 4 1/3 innings.Philadelphia took a 3-1 lead. Odubel Herreras RBI single in the first put Philadelphia on the board and the Phillies took advantage of Colorados sloppy play in the second when Freddy Galvis scored on Gerardo Parras throwing error on Peter Bourjos double. Bourjos eventually scored on a wild pitch. It looked like we were a little low on fumes tonight, Rockies manager Walt Weiss said.BLACKMON GOES DEEPThe Rockies got a run back in the third on the first of Blackmons three homers, this one off the second deck in right field, and tied it in the fifth on Nolan Arenados sacrifice fly.Blackmon hit a one-out opposite-field homer to left in the seventh for his 17th homer of the season. He has five career multi-homer games, including three this season. He went deep again in the ninth with two outs for his first career three-homer game.I was just feeling pretty good today, Blackmon said. I think my body is just feeling good. I was really tired a few weeks ago and Ive broken through and bounced back and I feel strong.THOMPSON Ks FOURThompson accomplished a rare feat when he recorded four strikeouts in one inning, becoming the first Phillies pitcher to have four strikeouts in an inning since Doc White did it against Brooklyn in the fifth inning on July 21, 1902.Thompson opened the second inning by striking out David Dahl, but Dahl reached first on a wild pitch. Dahl went to third on Parras single and scored on Nick Hundleys grounder to first on a play that Howard was charged with a throwing error. The 22-year-old right-hander, whom the Phillies acquired last season from Texas in the trade that sent ace left-hander Cole Hamels to the Rangers, responded by striking out Ben Paulsen, Daniel Descalso and Gray for four strikeouts in one inning.DAHLS STREAK SNAPPEDDahl went 0 for 4 with three strikeouts to snap his hitting streak to start his career at 17 games. Dahl was vying to become the first player in history to begin his career with a hit in 18 straight games. On Thursday, he tied the record of 17 set by Cincinnatis Chuck Aleno in 1941.I know youre not going to get a hit every game, Dahl said. I was swinging at a lot of bad pitches tonight. It was a good streak. I just have to be ready to play tomorrow.TRAINERS ROOMRockies: Colorado placed 1B Mark Reynolds on the 15-day DL with a broken left hamate bone. Galatasaray said in a statement on its website Monday that Mancini signed a three-year contract and will be paid 3.5 million euros for the upcoming season, with his salary upped to 4.LONDON -- His pride would never allow him to say it. The internal mechanisms that keep a competitors nature functioning at peak efficiency wont even permit him to think it. But this is the moment Roger Federer has been waiting for.Federer, already the male all-time Grand Slam singles champion with 17 titles, hasnt won a major since the one he claimed here four years ago. He has remained confident that there is at least one more peak triumph laced into the strings of his racket, even though hes ripped through the pages of the calendar and is deep into his 34th year.In life, theres so much more to come, Federer said after he notched another win at Wimbledon on Monday. In tennis, theres not that much more. I hope there is a bit more in tennis. I hope I can win Wimbledon one more time. That would be nice.Say what you will on behalf of the UKs favorite son, Andy Murray. This tournament has become an empty table set to provide Federer fans with another feast. It became so the moment Novak Djokovics designs on a calendar-year Grand Slam were blown to smithereens by the atomic serves of Sam Querrey. It was an abrupt, unexpected shift, like ordering kobe beef and being served lobster. It was a game-changer, because Djokovic has been Federers nemesis. It is Djokovic, the 29-year old Serb, who has denied Federer the title in three Grand Slam finals (two here at Wimbledon) since the Swiss champ last won one. Its been Djokovic whos managed to push Federers foot out of the doorjamb each time hes tried to barge in and reclaim the No. 1 ranking.Meanwhile, Federer has lorded it over everyone else. Granted, Murray has been playing well. But Federer has won their past five meetings. He also handled Murray in the 2012 Wimbledon final and ruined him in straight sets in the semis last year. Djokovic and Federer were a class better than the rest of the field last year. Federer looks like he still may be, despite the assorted struggle that has limited him to 22 matches before Wimbledon began this year. But Federer hasnt spent much of his down time exploring options that lie outside the white lines.I havent done that much, to be quite honest, Federer said. Ive been tired. Ive been resting, watching some football, playing with my kids in the yard, doing treatment, watching tennis. I think its important right now to be in that mindset. My friends, my family, everybody around me did all the Beyonce, Matilda, all the stuff I wanted to do, too, but just not right now. Right now I have other goals.Federer hasnt lost a set at Wimbledon thus far. It hard to gauge his fitness. Theres no question aabout his fidelity or enthusiasm.dddddddddddd. He equaled Martina Navratilovas Grand Slam record with 306 match-wins. In making the quarterfinals here for the 14th time (in 18 tries), he tied Jimmy Connors record. The amazing thing is that Federer acts and talks like none of this is a big deal. Iron man? The way he tells it, Federer dropped straight from the womb into a lifelong tub of butter, racket in hand.I prefer playing matches in front of thousands of people and on legendary courts rather than practicing in front of nobody, he admitted. But even that I take pleasure from as well. I dont feel like I need it necessarily to live, otherwise I feel like Id be in the wrong place, playing for the wrong reasons.Federer has a pile of right reasons now, starting with the most selfish one. He was in a similar situation in 2009, when his clay-court nemesis, Rafael Nadal, was eliminated in the fourth round of the French Open. With the King of Clay out of the way, the pressure suddenly accumulated. The four matches leading to the title were harrowing for Federer. He barely survived a five-set semifinal with big-hitting Juan Martin del Potro but did and went on to win the title. On Wednesday, Federer has a quarterfinal date with big-hitting Marin Cilic, a 27-year old Croatian who won his one and only Grand Slam title in New York two years ago.He brushed me off the court like I was nothing a few years back in the [2014] US Open semis, Federer said in his on-court interview Monday.Federer sounded almost bitter. Familiar and much-loved Reasonable Fed soon reasserted himself.I didnt play poorly in any way, Federer said. It was just all on his [Cilics] racket. It was very seldom that I was blown off the court like that. I had some chances. But every time I had a small chance, either he served another big serve, or on the return, he went for broke. It was unbelievably impressive how he finished that tournament, quarters, semis, finals. I dont think he lost a set. It was unbelievably impressive.Federer has practiced with Cilic here at Wimbledon, probably never really expecting to meet him at such a critical juncture in the tournament. Federer is prepared. His entire life has been about preparation and vigilance. About being ready to seize the moment. Contemplating Cilics big game, Federer said: I know what Im getting into. What hes really getting into is the stretch run of a Grand Slam without Novak Djokovic in his way for the first time in a long time.
