CHICAGO -- There could be a championship celebration at Wrigley Field on Sunday, just not the kind the Chicago Cubs and generations of their long-suffering fans dreamed of seeing.Tops in the majors with 103 wins, the Cubs simply cant afford to lose another game. Otherwise, a championship drought dating to 1908 will continue. The Cubs once again got shut down by Corey Kluber on Saturday night and didnt get the dominant start they needed from John Lackey.Throw in two errors by third baseman Kris Bryant and it added up to a 7-2 loss to the Cleveland Indians in Game 4 of the World Series. They trail 3-1, and if they dont get more from their lineup or a big effort by ace Jon Lester on Sunday, it will once again be wait `til next year for the Cubs.We got to win tomorrow, Anthony Rizzo said. Thats the bottom line. Weve got to do whatever we can to win the ballgame tomorrow and thats it. Theres no looking past that.Only six teams have come back from a 3-1 deficit to win the World Series, most recently the 1985 Kansas City Royals. The Cubs sure did not envision falling into such a hole. Nor did their fans, who packed Wrigley Field and the neighboring bars. The surrounding streets were a sea of blue hours before the ballpark opened just as they were prior to Game 3. But the excitement and enthusiasm surrounding the Cubs first trip to the World Series since 1945 has given way to disappointment after two tough losses.By the time Javier Baez grounded to pitcher Dan Otero to end the game, there was almost an eerie quiet inside Wrigley after the 102-year-old ballpark had been rocking. Its just a matter of us gaining offensive confidence, said manager Joe Maddon, whose team is hitting .204 in the Series. Thats what we need right now. More than anything, when youre not hitting like that, the whole vibes very difficult to push in that real positive direction. So youll continually try to be positive in the dugout during the course of the game. But, you know, its difficult. Its difficult especially this time of the year. We just need that offensive epiphany somehow to get us pushing in the right direction. The Cubs have not won a World Series game at Wrigley since they beat Detroit in Game 6 in 1945. They lost the next one at home to the Tigers and have been haunted by curses and disappointment in the decades since then. But for fans who have suffered through it all, this team has provided hope for them like no other. Even if the Cubs dont find a way to dig themselves out of this hole, their lineup is loaded with young sluggers such as Bryant and Rizzo and budding stars like Addison Russell and NLCS co-MVP Javier Baez. They boast one of the top rotations in baseball, with Lester, Kyle Hendricks and Jake Arrieta leading the way. There is reason to believe that a team that got to the NLCS a year ago and advanced to the World Series this year will be in the title picture for years to come. Thats some consolation for their fans even if they want it all now.Dexter Fowler got the Cubs off to a good start in this game, hitting a leadoff double and scoring in the first against Kluber. He added a solo homer off Andrew Miller in the eighth.Rizzo and the struggling Jason Heyward had two hits apiece. But a team that finished third in the majors in runs, once again failed to produce. As long as theres an out, as long as theres a pitch, we still have a good shot, Russell said. Weve won three games in a row before. They at least scored in this game after getting shut out in four of the previous eight. But they didnt do much against Kluber. The 2014 AL Cy Young Award winner went six innings, allowing one run and five hits pitching on three days rest. It was about as good as his previous start, when he went six scoreless innings and struck out nine in Game 1.Lackey simply couldnt match that. The veteran right-hander allowed three runs -- two earned -- and four hits over five innings. He gave up a leadoff homer to Carlos Santana in the second, and another run came home in the inning thanks to a pair of throwing errors by Bryant. We knew coming into this series, stuff is going to hit the fan, Russell said. We score a run and they score a run. We have to score back. Thats just the name of the game. We didnt do that. Our team is better than just one run, two runs, but the team played their heart out tonight.Wholesale Shoes Black Friday Free Shipping . Catch all the action on TSN2 at 11pm et/8pm pt. LOUIS -- Lance Lynn was one of the more enthusiastic participants as the St.ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Cameron Maybin will need some time to get used to playing left field for the Los Angeles Angels after he spent his big league career in center.Maybin thinks hell require no time at all to get comfortable hitting in front of Mike Trout and Albert Pujols. The Angels acquired the 29-year-old outfielder from the Detroit Tigers on Thursday in a trade for right-hander Victor Alcantara. Los Angeles also announced it will exercise Maybins $9 million contract option for 2017.Maybin batted a career-best .315 with four homers, 43 RBIs and 15 stolen bases in 94 games for the Tigers last season. Despite a late start due to a broken wrist from getting hit by a pitch in spring training, he also hit .380 with runners in scoring position, one of the majors best marks. After Maybin learned he had been traded for the fifth time in less than nine years, he immediately warmed to the idea of hitting in a lineup featuring two of the games top sluggers.Being on this team, with the way they play baseball and constantly have guys moving, whether its hit-and-run or stealing bases or bunting, I think I fit in with this style of play really well, Maybin said. Im looking forward to playing for Mike Scioscia. Ive enjoyed watching how he manages from afar. I look forward to being part of that poetry in motion.Maybin will have to make two moves with this trade, however: Along with relocation to Orange County, hell have to slide over to left field.Maybin primarily has played center for his entire career, but general manager Billy Eppler expects Maybin to be the Angels every-day left fielder alongside Trout and right fielder Kole Calhoun. Maybin hasnt played in left since a five-game stint during his first big league season in 2007 with Detroit.I am attached to [center], but anybody whos been around me [knows] I always put the team first, Maybin said. With the athletic ability Ive been given, I think I can probably go out there and be one of the best left fielders in the game. ... I look forward to playing left field alongside Mike Trout. You put two center fielders out there, I think Ill be able to make his job a lot easier, and vice versa.Alcantara, 23, has spent five years in the Angels minorr league system.dddddddddddd He went 3-7 with a 4.30 ERA in 29 appearances for Double-A Arkansas last season, yet the alarmingly shallow depth of the Angels farm system made him one of their better prospects. The Angels got minimal production out of left field in 2016, the teams worst season since 1999. Los Angeles finished fourth in the American League West at 74-88, a steep decline from the 2014 team that won 98 games with the best record in baseball.Eppler swung the first trade of the baseball offseason to shore up a position of seemingly perpetual need for Los Angeles. While an MVP candidate and an above-average major leaguer occupy the other two outfield spots at the Big A, left field has been a problem in recent years. The Angels also have a dismaying recent history of acquiring veterans who underperformed once they joined the outfield, including Josh Hamilton, Gary Matthews Jr., Vernon Wells, Matt Joyce, Daniel Nava and Craig Gentry.Eppler was particularly interested in Maybin after getting an endorsement from Bud Black, Maybins manager in San Diego. Black is now Epplers special assistant. This was something that clearly was an objective of ours heading into the winter, Eppler said. Weve been able to acquire a guy that we are happy to put in left field and give him an opportunity to play every day.The Tigers also exercised their $6 million option for 2017 on closer Francisco Rodriguez, who finished second in the AL with 44 saves in a remarkable season for the former Angels right-hander known as K-Rod. The option contained a $2 million buyout. We liked the job K-Rod did last season, and the numbers show he was a reliable closer for us, said Al Aliva, executive vice president of baseball operations and general manager of the Tigers. He stabilizes the back end of our bullpen and provides veteran leadership to our younger bullpen arms.We will weigh our options as far as center field is concerned for next season. There will be a wide-open competition starting in the spring, and well see how it plays out.The Associated Press contributed to this report. ' ' '
