ATLANTA -- Arizona manager Kirk Gibson found no fault with Josh Collmenter after the right-hander settled down in the third inning. Collmenter gave up a career-high 11 hits, and the Diamondbacks couldnt solve Ervin Santana or the Atlanta bullpen in a 5-2 loss to the Braves on Friday night. "He went out there and did the best he could and got through six innings. We were unable to score runs," Gibson said. Freddie Freeman drove in two runs, and Santana won his second straight start for Atlanta, which stretched its winning streak to eight games. Arizona began the night tied with Houston for the most losses in the majors with 51. The Diamondbacks have lost seven of 11. "Were trying everything we can to turn around things, but its not happening," third baseman Martin Prado said. "Were trying to have good at-bats and everything. I feel like were pretty close. Theres a bunch of guys having good at-bats." After earning three victories from June 20-28, Collmenter (7-5) allowed five runs, one walk, and struck out three in six-plus innings. The Braves have won 10 of 11 to move 10 games over .500 for the first time since April 29. They lead the NL East by 1 1/2 games. Santana (7-5) gave up six hits and two runs with one walk and six strikeouts in 7 1-3 innings. The Braves made it 2-0 in the first on Freemans RBI single and Jason Heywards RBI groundout. Atlanta went up 4-1 in the third on Andrelton Simmons bases-loaded RBI single and Justin Uptons RBI walk, but Collmenter stranded the bases loaded when Heyward popped out. Collmenters night ended after Simmons led off the seventh with a double. Oliver Perez, the next Arizona pitcher, allowed another RBI single by Freeman to make it 5-1. "I wasnt missing so much up in the zone as missing over the plate, enough for them to get a piece of the ball," Collmenter said. "I just didnt capitalize on my opportunities when I could have made a pitch." Santana seemed in sync most of the night, but that hasnt been the case over the last few weeks. After winning 2-0 against the Cubs on May 10, Santana went 1-5 with a 5.96 ERA over his next eight starts before earning a 10-3 victory last Saturday at Philadelphia. "Everything my way is getting back again, so I just have to keep it up," Santana said. "Keep my mind positive and keep working down in the zone." Santana retired 11 straight before Didi Gregorius singled to begin the eighth. He left the game one out later when Ender Inciarte singled. After Luis Avilan retired David Peralta on an RBI forceout, Jordan Walden gave up a double to Paul Goldschmidt before striking out Miguel Montero to end the threat. In the ninth, Craig Kimbrel struck out Prado, retired Gerardo Parra on a groundout and got Nick Ahmed to fly out for his 27th save in 31 chances. Arizona cut the lead to 2-1 in the second when Prado led off with a single, moved to second and third on groundouts and scored on Santanas wild pitch. Santana didnt make many mistakes. "He was spotting," Prado said. "I saw him pretty good, but he was commanding his fastball. They took advantage of the first inning and scored a couple runs, and that was good enough for him." Teddy Bridgewater went 26-for-42 for 268 yards with a touchdown for the Vikings (4-5), who head into their bye week having won two straight games. It was a great team victory today and Im really proud of the ways the guys fought, said Minnesota head coach Mike Zimmer. I feel like our team really grew up today in a lot of ways. We went down a couple of times, and kept fighting and fighting and it paid off. Robert Griffin III returned to play for the first time since Week 2 and was 18-for-28 for 251 yards with one touchdown and an interception for the Redskins (3-6), who had won their previous two games. I was not good enough to win and thats all that matters, said Griffin. We lost the game. Guys fought really hard. I have to play better. Washington had gone on top on Alfred Morris second score of the game with just over nine minutes to play, but Minnesota answered to again take the lead. Facing a 3rd-and-10, Bridgewater and Jarius Wright got together for a 21-yard connection to the Washington 36. Griffin had been out with a dislocated ankle, but we was able to show off his athleticism on Washingtons first drive. Facing a 3rd-and-7, Griffin escaped two potential sackers before hitting Roy Helu for a short pass that turned into a 24-yard gain. Kai Forbath made a 36- yard field goal to polish off the 13-play, 62-yard drive and give the Redskins a 3-0 lead with just over six minutes to play in the first. It was all Morris on Washingtons next possession as his first three carries went for 27 yards down to the Minnessota 19.dddddddddddd Griffins next two passes fell incomplete, but the team got a fresh set of downs thanks to an illegal contact penalty. The next snap saw Morris take a handoff around the right tackle and in on a 14-yard score for a 10-0 lead early in the second. The next several drives all ended in punts and the Vikings failed on a 4th- and-2 at the Washington 39 late in the half. However, the Vikings defense came up with a big play as Captain Munnerlyn picked off Griffin to get the ball back for his team near midfield. The first play of the ensuing drive saw Bridgewater and Jennings get together for 22 yards down to the Washington 24. Two plays later, Bridgewater found Chase Ford alone in the end zone for a 20-yard score to make it a 10-7 game going into the break. Minnesota went on top on its first touch of the second half as it started with the ball near midfield and a 15-yard catch by Jerick McKinnon coupled with a roughing the passer call on Washington got the ball down to the 25. After McKinnon had runs of 15 and nine yards, Asiata punched it in from a yard out for a 14-10 lead just over four minutes into the third. The Redskins came right back, though, to take the lead. Griffin converted a 3rd-and-4 with a 17-yard pass to Jordan Reed. Facing another third down, Griffins run fell short, but an unnecessary roughness call on Harrison Smith gave Washington a fresh set of downs and the ball at the Minnesota 13. The next snap saw Griffin hit DeSean Jackson in the end zone for a 17-14 lead. Washington tacked on to its lead on its next touch, as Forbath hit a 26-yard field goal to cap a nine-play, 43-yard drive for a 20-14 lead with under two minutes to play in the third.
