ARCADIA, Calif. -- The newly installed turf course at Santa Anita was met with praise from several prominent riders after the first weekend of the tracks autumn meeting, even though some expressed concern about the amount of water applied to the course after Fridays opening-day program. The course, a Bermuda-Bandera blend, was installed in June, replacing a surface that showed significant wear and tear in the preceding year. The new course was used for 11 races from Friday through Sunday -- four races each on Friday and Saturday and three on Sunday. There are two turf races scheduled for each card Thursday and Friday. The Breeders Cup races will be run at Santa Anita on Nov. 4-5.Jockeys Victor Espinoza, Mike Smith, and Gary Stevens spoke in favor of the condition of the course but said the course was overwatered after Fridays program.Smith won a maiden race at 1-1/8 miles on turf Sunday aboard Exhale. He described the course as wonderful, with a beautiful bounce. Smith said he was more satisfied with the courses condition on Sunday than Saturday. They put a lot of water on it, and it was very wet, he said. Its in good shape, much better than yesterday. They glide on it.Espinoza said the course was better on Sunday but not as good as opening day. He said runners were digging into it on Saturday.Stevens said he was hopeful the track would use the course conservatively through October as the Breeders Cup approaches.I hope they dont overuse it, he said on Sunday morning. It tends to take its toll. Im not trying to be negative. Opening day, it was perfect ground. Yesterday, it was wet. It was still good.Kent Desormeaux described the course as a carpet. He said the watering was beneficial after the course produced quick times on Friday. It needed to soften up, he said. We start off with a wet track, but by the end of the day, its dry as a bone. Its beautiful.Track senior vice president Joe Morris said maintenance crews will make adjustments regarding watering as the season progresses.Well work with that, he said.Overall, he said the course will be used extensively during the meeting. Were not going to baby it, he said. Its going to be a good course.Rick Hammerle, vice president of racing, said inside rail settings will be altered frequently to provide the freshest ground possible. There are four positions available -- the permanent position and temporary settings 10, 20, and 30 feet from the inside. For Thursday and Fridays programs, the temporary rails will be 20 or 30 feet from the inside position. Hammerle said the inside position will be used for one or two more days this week and will not be used again after Mondays program until the Breeders Cup races. We can move the rail every day, he said. We want it to be as perfect as we can be. We need the roots to grow. We think it will get stronger and stronger.Attendance, handle riseSaturdays 11-race program, which included five Grade 1 races, had strong business compared with the corresponding day in 2015.Saturdays attendance was 18,563, up from 13,537 last year, according to data released to the public. LAKE PLACID, N.Y. -- Steven Holcomb wins a World Cup bobsled gold medal on home ice nearly every year, and Jamie Gruebel Poser may be following that same path.It was a U.S. bobsled sweep at Mount Van Hoevenberg on Friday. Gruebel Poser and Aja Evans held off U.S. teammates Elana Meyers Taylor and Lolo Jones to win the womens race, and Holcomb teamed with Sam McGuffie to win the two-man race -- his sixth gold in the last seven international two-man races on his home track.Every single person out here wanted to win today, Holcomb said. To have a victory, to be on top, no matter where it is, its nice; just getting back to that mentality of winning again. It is a mentality. Putting together two runs. These cold conditions make the ice very hard and very slippery. Being the veteran on the tour, my experience paid off today. For Greubel Poser, it was the second straight year she drove to a World Cup win at Lake Placid. She and Evans finished their two runs on a frigid day in 1 minute, 52.02 seconds, taking advantage of super-hard, super-fast ice to set a track record along the way. Meyers Taylor and Jones were 0.14 seconds back in 1:52.16, while the Canadian team of Olympic champion Kaillie Humphries and Cynthia Appiah was third in 1:53.05.It just shows how strong Teamm USA is, Meyers Taylor said.ddddddddddddGruebel Poser and Evans broke the track record in their first heat, finishing in 55.81. Thats a significant shaving off the former mark, 56.28 set by Meyers Taylor and Cherrelle Garrett two years ago.We were so excited to see that time when we crossed the finish line, Greubel Poser said. I was screaming, we were just so excited to know that we went that fast. We literally gave everything we had at the top.And in the mens race, only U.S. and Canadian sleds reached the podium as well -- a rare World Cup bobsled day with nothing but North Americans in the top three spots.Holcomb and McGuffie won in 1:49.47. Canada took silver and bronze, with the team of World Cup points leader Justin Kripps and Jesse Lumsden finishing in 1:49.74, 0.01 ahead of Chris Spring and Lascelles Brown. The four-person race is Saturday, and Meyers Taylor is expected to be one of the drivers in the field -- pushed by a team that will include her husband, Nic Taylor. She would be competing against male drivers for the third time in World Cup competition, after doing so twice in the 2014-15 season and finishing 13th and 16th. ' ' '
