RIO DE JANEIRO -- A police officer was shot in the head after he and two others working security at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics got lost near a slum and encountered gunfire. The officers from Brazils national security force were using a GPS device to navigate unfamiliar streets Wednesday afternoon when they took a wrong turn off a highway leading to Rios international airport. Their truck was sprayed with bullets, and officer Helio Vieira was shot. The Justice Ministry said Vieira was recovering after a four-hour surgery, and was in stable condition. The other officers suffered minor injuries when the windows of their vehicle shattered.Dozens of heavily armed commandos could be seen Thursday frisking residents and going house to house in the Mare complex of slums, one of Rios most crime-ridden areas that is dominated by drug-trafficking gangs. Snipers took up positions on a nearby highway, as a low-flying police helicopter circled overhead.Justice Minister Alexandre de Moraes said two suspects had been identified but were not yet in custody. He denounced what he called a cowardly attack. The incident was the bloodiest of several that have marred the start of South Americas first Olympic Games. On Tuesday, two windows were shattered on a bus carrying journalists from an Olympic venue in the impoverished Deodoro district. Rio organizers said the bus was hit by a rock, even though one passenger, who identified herself as a former American military officer, believed the cause to be gunfire. There were no serious injuries. The equestrian venue in Deodoro has had two brushes with stray gunfire since the games started. A bullet flew through the roof of a media tent there Saturday; officials said it had been fired from a hillside slum, and that the intended target was probably a security camera on a blimp. A second bullet hit Wednesday near the stables. Officials were adding more security at the venue.Muggings have also been reported among Olympic athletes, officials and journalists.Pervasive violence is an everyday part of life in Rio. After declines in past years, homicides have spiked again as Brazils worst recession in decades fuels violence and forces budget cuts. The number of homicides in the first five months of 2016 increased by 18 percent to 1,870 in greater Rio.Police killings are also on the rise, with the vast majority of victims black residents of impoverished slums that are fiefdoms of the citys many criminal gangs.More than 85,000 security forces -- double the number present in London in 2012 -- have been deployed to the city to keep thousands of Olympic athletes and an estimated 500,000 tourists safe.---Joshua Goodman is on Twitter: https://twitter.com/apjoshgoodman His work can be found at http://bigstory.ap.org/journalist/joshua-goodmanPascal Siakam Jersey .C. -- Charlotte Bobcats coach Steve Clifford said after all of these years in the NBA hes still amazed at some of the things LeBron James does. Bolt strolled through the interview area with his usual relaxed demeanor; Gatlin responded to questions in tense bursts. The biggest event of the Rio Olympics began Saturday with the two stars fully in character. Bolt, the loose and confident Jamaican champion, still saving his top gear. Gatlin, the tainted talent, straining to catch the greatest sprinter ever. The ending to the saga will be written Sunday night at Olympic Stadium in one of the most anticipated races of all time. The drama is heightened because Bolt has slowed down since the 2012 London Olympics, when he won an unprecedented second consecutive trio of sprint gold medals. Since then, Bolt has cracked 9.8 seconds only twice, albeit in the 2013 and 2015 world championships. Gatlin ran 9.80 at the U.S. Olympic trials, the fastest time in the world this year, and ran sub-9.8 five times last season. He should have beaten Bolt at last years world championships, but Gatlin stumbled in the final meters.Bolt, who holds the world record of 9.58 seconds, injured his hamstring six weeks ago. He reacted slowly to the starting gun Saturday but made up the ground with his still-formidable top-end speed, clocking 10.07 seconds in a slight headwind. It wasnt the best start, felt kind of sluggish, Bolt said, frequently rubbing his newly close-cropped haircut. The fact that its the morning (the race actually began at 12:42 p.m.), Im not used to running this early in the morning at a championship. Hopefully tomorrow, Ill come out and feel much better. Is his hamstring OK? Bolt glanced down at it, looked back up with a half-laugh and said, Yeah.IIm feeling good.dddddddddddd Im happy. As I said, Ive got the first one out of the way so Im happy about that, said Bolt, who turns 30 on the last day of the Games. So now its all about execution and getting it right when it comes to the finals.Gatlin finished his prelim heat in 10.01 seconds. Doping questions have dominated the Rio Games, and Gatlins name has been dragged into that mire due to his 2006 violation for using testosterone. His four-year ban knocked him out of the 2008 Olympics; he took bronze in 2012.On Saturday, as the 34-year-old Gatlin listened to reporters questions, you could occasionally see his jaw muscles tighten. In 04, I was such a young guy. I really wasnt anticipating anything, Gatlin said. I wasnt even a dark horse in the field. 2012, just coming back and being able to make the podium, it was like a reset for me. Aiight, Im ready, Im strong, I can be competitive. Coming into 16, Im older, Im wiser, I just feel good. Im at the end of my season, Im at the end of my career and Im like, just have fun with it.The continuous doping questions are not fun. Lilly King, the American swimmer who has been outspoken about drug cheats, went so far as to recently say Gatlin should not have been allowed into these Olympics.I dont even know who Lilly King is. She does swimming, not track and field, Gatlin snapped. So Im not worried about that. I have confidence in my policies that Im with; USADA (U.S. Anti-Doping Agency) has done a great job, WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency) has done a great job, Ive come back and did what I need to do.Ive worked hard just like everybody else. I get tested just like everybody else. And Im back here. ' ' '
