CALGARY, Alberta -- The Columbus Blue Jackets and their emerging rookie defenseman are enjoying this breakout season.Sam Gagner got his fifth goal in five games, Zach Werenski continued his impressive rookie season with two assists and the Blue Jackets beat the Calgary Flames 4-1 on Friday night for their eighth straight win.The streak is tied for the second-longest ever for Columbus, which is in third place in the highly competitive Metropolitan Division with 42 points.Werenski has 20 points on the season, tied for fourth among rookies. He has six more points than the closest rookie defenseman. Were pretty hot right now and its fun to be on a winning team. said Werenski, who was selected eighth overall in the 2015 NHL Draft. His first assist came when he forced a turnover in the neutral zone that led to Brandon Saads goal with 5:34 left in the first, putting Columbus up 2-0.Werenski also assisted on Gagners power-play goal 1:14 into the second for a 3-1 lead. The 19-year-old defenseman fired a slap shot from the blue line that Gagner deflected for his team-leading 13th goal.It seems like the puck is finding the back of the net, Werenski said. I just threw it to the net, hoping it got there. I couldnt really see anything and next thing I know guys are celebrating.Boone Jenner, Brandon Saad and Matt Calvert also scored for Columbus, which owns the NHLs best winning percentage at .750. The Jackets are 13-1-2 in their last 16.Weve had a really good mindset where were just trying to approach every day as a new day and trying to get better, Gagner said. That mindset has been huge for us. Hopefully we can keep it going.Sergei Bobrovsky made 22 saves to run his winning streak to seven and improve to 18-5-2.Sean Monahan scored for Calgary, which has lost two straight on the heels of a six-game winning streak. Chad Johnson had 25 stops.Last couple games, its been frustrating because guys are trying to block them and theyre just getting piece of them or pucks are floating through three guys, Johnson said.Monahan extended his career-best point streak to nine games (five goals, six assists), which is now the NHLs longest active streak after Sidney Crosby ended his nine-game run Friday.Calvert got his goal short-handed 7:31 into the second. He intercepted Johnny Gaudreaus pass at the blue line and raced away on a breakaway, tucking his fifth goal through Chad Johnsons pads.It was redemption for Calvert, who took the penalty in the first period that put the Flames on a two-man advantage and led to Monahans goal at 16:45.Gaudreau combined with Kris Versteeg to set up Monahans one-timer. Gaudreau has points in six straight (two goals, eight assists) since returning from his broken finger.Game notesColumbus coach John Tortorella (499-413-127) is one win away from becoming the 24th NHL coach to win 500 games. ... North America GM Peter Chiarelli said Ekblad will be evaluated and continue his rehab with Panthers team doctors.Aaron was a very important part of our defense core here and a key leader on this team, Chiarelli said. We wish him all the best in his recovery.North America now must soldier on without the player who had the most ice time in the tournament opener.Hes a great player, goaltender Matt Murray said. He seems like a 10-year veteran and hes only 20 years old. Yeah, well miss him.Without Ekblad, the 2014 No. 1 draft pick whos already an NHL franchise defenseman, North America will need to lean heavier on Morgan Rielly, Colton Parayko and Shayne Gostisbehere in a crucial game. The whole team has to be prepared to play more minutes, and rise to the challenge and take care of each other defensively, Rielly said. You have to learn on the fly a little bit.Coach Todd McLellan praised the play of replacement Jacob Trouba but also lamented Ekblads absence. On a team of 23-and-under Americans and Canadians, youth was a weakness during a rough 10-minute stretch against Russia. When youre a group of young players, youre looking for somebody just to take charge and settle it down, maybe get a shift or two under your belt, and we didnt get that quick enough, McLellan said.North America has no choice but to roll with Rielly, Parayko, Gostisbehere, Trouba, Ryan Murray and Seth Jones.Would we love to havee Aaron Ekblad? Absolutely, McLellan said.dddddddddddd If we dont, we feel good about the group that we have. Here are some things to watch when North America faces Sweden:WILL MURRAY PLAY: Murray vs. John Gibson is the decision in goal. Murray stopped the first 15 shots he faced against Russia before allowing four goals on consecutive shots and jammed his thumb in the game, but he also won the Stanley Cup and is 8-0 with a 1.60 goals-against average and .935 save percentage after a loss in his NHL career. That does factor into our decision, McLellan said.WILL MURRAY PLAY, PART II: North Americas other Murray, defenseman Ryan Murray, left practice Tuesday. McLellan said it was a maintenance day and expects him to play against Sweden, but if he cant then North America would have to dress 13 forwards and five defensemen. You usually want six, Trouba said.HEN-RIK: Sweden goaltender Henrik Lundqvist returned from a one-game absence because of illness to post a 36-save shutout against Finland on Tuesday. Lundqvist would like to play the second half of the back-to-back, but thats a major question for Sweden.SWEDISH D-LIGHT: The all-world blue line led by Erik Karlsson, Victor Hedman, Anton Stralman and Oliver Ekman-Larsson has been as good as advertised for Sweden, which has allowed one goal in two games. Hedman and Stralman, defense partners on the Tampa Bay Lightning, look in sync as if its midseason.MCDAVID WATCH: North America captain Connor McDavid was superb against Russia, setting up a goal by Auston Matthews. Now that the pressures on, McDavid could be even better and produce more offense.---Follow Stephen Whyno on Twitter at http://www.twitter.com/SWhyno . ' ' '
