The seventh-ranked Stanford Cardinal have excelled in the role as the hunter the last four years, winning three Pac-12 championship games. But now the Cardinal begin conference play as the hunted when they host the University of Southern California at Stanford Stadium in Palo Alto, Calif., on Saturday night.Stanford (1-0) was the preseason favorite to repeat as Pac-12 champs, the first time the Cardinal have been favored under David Shaw. A big reason for that is the return of running back Christian McCaffrey, a Heisman Trophy finalist who set an NCAA FBS record with 3,864 all-purpose yards as a sophomore. The Cardinal opened their season in their signature old-school way: a run-heavy, relatively low-scoring contest. McCaffrey had 22 carries for 126 yards and two touchdowns in a 26-13 win over Kansas State on Sept. 2 at Stanford Stadium. Stanford also got a big game from first-year starting quarterback Ryan Burns who completed over 75 percent of his passes. He started off very fast, was in great rhythm, Shaw said of Burns. He made great decisions. We got great protection.Stanford jumped to a 17-point lead before struggling to hold on. The Cardinal amassed just 30 second half yards before McCaffrey broke off a 41-yard TD jaunt. Not clean, not pretty in the second half, but we played hard, Shaw said. We showed heart at the end.USC (1-1), meanwhile, recovered from an ugly 52-6 opening loss to No. 1 Alabama by thumping Utah State 45-7 on Saturday at the Coliseum. Like the Cardinal, the Trojans feature a new starting quarterback in junior Max Browne, and freshman Sam Darnold has seen time as well, adding two touchdown passes. We needed that, Trojans wide receiver Darreus Rogers. Its big to build our confidence back up.Stanford is beginning a brutal three-week stretch that includes playing at UCLA on Sept. 24 and then trekking to No. 8 Washington on Sept. 29.The Cardinal wont get any sympathy from the Trojans when it comes to tough schedules, though. After opening the season with the embarrassing 46-point loss to the Crimson Tide in Arlington, Texas, the Trojans righted he ship with a 45-7 win over Utah State last Saturday, giving coach Clay Helton his first victory in four tries since the interim label was dropped from his title late last season. Following the Pac-12 title game rematch with Stanford, USC hits the road again for a game at Utah on Sept. 23. Those are probably the two biggest physical tests you can get in the Pac-12.USC played Stanford twice last season, losing 41-31 at home early in the regular season and 41-22 in the Pac-12 Championship Game. The Cardinal outrushed the Trojans by a combined 457-325.Were going to have to take it up to a whole other level, myself included, said running back Justin Davis.Said Helton: They are the Pac-12 champs. We have a huge challenge.Helton has often talked about USC being less Hollywood. Less flash and more substance, especially when it comes to establishing a running game and being physical. Basically, he wants USC to be more like Stanford. The matchup doesnt lack for flash, though. USC has wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster, running backs Ronald Jones II and Justin Davis, and cornerback/returner Adoree Jackson. Those are special, flashy talents. The Cardinal, of course, have McCaffrey. The junior had a staggering 461 all-purpose yards in the Pac-12 Championship game -- 207 rushing, 105 receiving, 120 on kick returns and 29 on punt returns. He had only 249 all-purpose yards in the regular-season meeting against USC.So far this season, the Trojans have had two extremes -- the loss to Alabama and a dominating performance against Utah State. Did either result tell the truth about the real state of USC?Theres a lot of cleaning up to do before we play Stanford, Helton said. I understand that as a coach.USC leads the all-time series 60-31-3, but Stanford has won six of the last eight meetings including 41-22 in the 2015 Pac-12 Championship Game. The Trojans vacated a 2015 victory due to an NCAA penalty. Cheap Gary Carter Jersey . It just didnt show when he hit the ice. Matt Canada isnt promising any particular kind of offense at LSU -- other than on which scores enough to win.We do things according to what the players can do, Canada said Wednesday at his formal introduction as LSUs offensive coordinator. I dont like to pigeon-hole myself. Were this or were that. The biggest thing for me is scoring points, but the goal in a game is to score more points than the other team. It is not about to keep scoring to reach a certain number.LSU hired Canada, who currently serves as Pittsburghs offensive coordinator, away from the Panthers in hopes he can make the Tigers run-heavy offense more dynamic and productive against some of the nations better defenses. The hiring of Canada marks the first significant staff addition made by LSU coach Ed Orgeron, who took over on an interim basis after Les Miles was fired in late September and received the job on a permanent basis after going 5-2.He has put up tremendous numbers at the different spots hes worked, Orgeron said. He uses multiple shifts and multiple formations. He has a very creative mind. He makes it tough on the defenses he goes against. I felt he would be a fit with the staff. He didnt talk about his lofty numbers. He does a great job coaching quarterbacks -- spread or pro-style. He has had quarterbacks running the ball or throwing the ball.Canadas unit at Pitt enjoyed a prolific season, averaging 42.3 points and 447.5 yards as the Panthers went 8-4 this season. Pitt next meets Northwestern in the Pinstripe Bowl in Dec. 28 in New York, and Canada is expected to remain with the Panthers through that game.Canadas offenses have been defined by balance, creativity and misdirection. Of Pitts 5,370 total net yards of offense this season, 2,757 have come on the ground and 2,613 through the air.Orgeron also has already retained defensive coordinator Dave Aranda, whose unit allowed just 16.4 points per game. Back when Aranda was with Utah State, he went up against Canada, who was then the offensive coordinator at Wisconsin. There are not a lot of guys who do as good a job adjusting to his players than Matt, Aranda said. You notice all the shifts and misdirection. I love to see that type of offense in the spring. It gets your defense ready for anything. Its tough tto defend all the shifts and motions.dddddddddddd Plus, he makes a lot of adjustments in the game.Canada, who turned 45 next month, takes over for Steve Ensminger, whod moved up from tight ends coach on an interim basis after former coordinator Cam Cameron was fired on the same day Miles was.Miles was let go after several seasons in which his quarterbacks, with the exception of Zach Mettenberger, largely struggled to produce consistently. The lack of a passing game has been exposed most during what is now a six-game losing streak against Alabama. While LSUs defense kept the game close, the Tigers were shut out by the Crimson Tide, 10-0, this season. This season, LSU has averaged 238 yards rushing and only 188 passing. We have a real opportunity under coach Orgeron to propel LSU football to another level, Canada said in a statement released by LSU. The chance to put together a high-powered offense with the athletic ability available at LSU and the leadership of Coach `O is incredibly exciting. Ive long-respected Coach Orgerons ability to recruit, lead and motivate. What he did as head coach at LSU under difficult circumstances was really impressive. Were going to develop quarterbacks, score points and bring some excitement to the offense here at LSU, Canada added.A two-decade veteran of college coaching, Canada also has held offensive coordinator positions with Indiana, Northern Illinois, and North Carolina State. He was fired from his post at North Carolina State after the 2015 season despite his unit averaging about 413 yards per game with Jacoby Brissett at quarterback. Canada did not get into specifics about his departure from North Carolina State. But he was quickly taken off the market by Pitt and added another productive season on his coaching resume.Professionally and personally, this has been the hardest year of my life, Canada said, adding that he was surprised by his firing at North Carolina State. Obviously, there was a reason for it. I am fortunate the change was made, because Im here.---More AP college football: www.collegefootball.ap.org---Bryan Lazare in Baton Rouge contributed to this story. ' ' '
